In the late 1990s car makers were rushing to produce small, exciting convertibles to satisfy a sort of end-of-millennia enthusiasm for life and how to live it.  Mercedes' answer to this question was the SLK, a clever and distinctive coupe-and-convertible in one.

The original Mercedes SLK is a sort of shrunken version of the firm's bigger convertibles.  Which is a logical - and for enthusiastic drivers - great place to start because by the late 1990s Mercedes had been making brilliant, almost indestructible SL cars for over 40 years.

The original Mercedes SLK is a good looking sports car that combines an unusual folding hardtop roof with Mercedes' distinctive take on sporting cars - it's comfortable and solid like you'd expect a Mercedes to be, but quick and agile like a proper sports car should be.

When we decided to add a SLK to our fleet, we chose carefully.  We've picked a late model Mk1, which benefits frim improved build and aesthetics, and the 2 litre supercharged engine, which delivers around 180 bhp.  The smaller engine delivers great handling and decent performance.  To ensure maximum engagement our car is a rare manual - most SLKs were automatics - and it benefits from upgrades supplied by Mercedes sports specialist, AMG.  These include bigger wheels and a sports exhaust.  Comfortable and easy to drive it perfectly complements our older classics on our road trips.  Or enjoy it on its own by the day or hour.
